Do You Have Sub-Acromial Shoulder Pain?
As we come into the Spring, we start to notice some trends in the conditions we start to see at our clinic in Stewarton. With gardening season kicking off, Shoulder pain comes straight to the top of the list! Painting fences, trimming hedges, and using the lawnmower all mean one thing - more work for our shoulders, and for some people, this ramps up our physical activity considerably after a long winter! The perfect recipe for developing pain in our shoulder! But what is going on?
You may of heard of terms like: Shoulder Impingement, Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy, Sub-Acromial Bursitis, and Rotator Cuff Dysfunction. You may even have been diagnosed with one of these in the past. The term we tend to use now to cover all of these problems is “Sub-Acromial Shoulder Pain”. This is an umbrella terms for everything can cause pain in a specific part of the shoulder - the Sub-Acromial space.
This type of pain often presents as pain at the tip of the shoulder and often extends into the upper arm and front of the shoulder. Activities such as lifting your arm out to the side or overhead and lying on that side can be particularly painful and sharp. It can also present as an aching sensation when at rest - it can be really debilitating!
It is thought that the structures in the Sub-Acromial space are often effected. The Rotator Cuff Tendon, Long Head of Biceps Tendon, and Sub-Acromial Bursa can all contribute to the pain experience, usually due to poor function of the Rotator Cuff.
Good news is that with proper management this type of shoulder pain can resolve fully, usually after a considerable period of time - 12-16 weeks plus! Treatment often looks at activity modification, hands on treatment and progressive strengthening of the muscles around the shoulder.
