Why Does Pain Get Worse At Night?
Do you notice your pain getting worse at night? You're not alone—many of our patients experience this, and it can make winding down in the evening difficult. I wanted to share with you some reasons that this happens and offer some tips on how you can manage increasing pain at night.
Why Pain Worsens at Night
1. Reduced Movement:
During the day, we tend to be a little more active, which keeps blood flowing and helps manage discomfort. At night, when we finally get a chance to sit down and rest, the accumulation of the days activity, followed by sitting for long periods can increase the feelings of stiffness and make pain more noticeable.
2. Increased Inflammation:
As your body rests, inflammatory processes can heighten. In the evening, our bodies make use of this time to try and help you recover. This causes changes to the chemical environment of our bodies and can sometimes increase pain levels.
3. Focus on Pain:
With fewer distractions at night, it’s easier to become more aware of your pain. Anxiety or increased stress levels can also make pain feel worse when your mind has time to dwell on it.
How to Manage Night Pain
Stay Active: Gentle stretching or a short walk before bed can keep some blood flowing.
Use Heat Therapy: Applying heat to sore areas before bed can help relax muscles and reduce discomfort.
Practice Relaxation Techniques: Deep breathing or meditation can help reduce stress and anxiety, easing pain.
Adjust Your Sleep Environment: Make sure your mattress and pillows provide adequate support.
